1 〔波などにゆさぶられる〕 be knocked [tossed] about; be buffeted; 〔人込みでもみくしゃにされる〕 be jostled 《in a crowd》.

●(船が)波にもまれる be buffeted [tossed about] by the seas; be at the mercy of the waves; be tortured by rough seas

・世間の荒波にもまれる be buffeted about in the world; be tossed about in the storms of life; go through the rough and smooth [ups and downs] of life; suffer hardships in life; struggle for existence

・満員電車でもまれる be jostled [pushed and shoved] in a crowded train.

2 〔困難に鍛えられる〕 see [experience] hardships; be sorely tried.

●人中でもまれる suffer from contact with many people

・もまれて人間的に強くなる become a stronger person through bitter experience of the world.

●社会に出てよくもまれなければ一人前の人間になれない. If one doesn't rough it in the real world, one can't become a complete person.
